Auto-Renewal and Cancellation Terms

Use this checklist to evaluate recurring billing, cancellation windows, and refund limitations before subscribing.

Estimated read: 6 minutes

1. Confirm Renewal Triggers and Notice Periods

Policies should state exactly when subscriptions renew and how notice is delivered. High-risk terms often rely on generic notice language or place notification responsibility entirely on the user.

2. Verify Cancellation Channels and Deadlines

Check whether cancellation can be completed directly in account settings, and whether deadlines apply before the renewal date. Complicated cancellation paths increase billing dispute risk.

3. Review Partial Refund and Credit Policies

Some services deny refunds after renewal even when usage is minimal. Identify whether refunds are prorated, credit-based, or not available at all.

4. Watch for Billing Terms Hidden in Linked Policies

Renewal logic is sometimes defined in separate billing policies referenced by link. Review those linked documents before accepting terms to avoid missing key restrictions.
